Frick the Cat (1995-2004)
A Fricky Kitty

Frique "Frick" Frickademus (Felix domesticus freaky) was a Domestic Short Hair cat born in 1995, and paired initially with a girl named Christine who called him Freak. When Christine married Neil, a man whose allergies are held close to his heart, Freak needed a new home and so he came to us and was redubbed with a more French-Canadian twist as Frique (though he was usually called "Fricky"). He was also known as Frickity-Frock, Frickadee-dee-dee and Catlog.

When Frick was a kitten he used to enjoy the texture of a yellow, knitted toilet-seat cover. When he moved to our house he quickly found a yellow, woolen toque to replace the void in his life, and has been dragging it around and grinding his pelvis against it ever since. We took to calling the toque "Frick's Girlfriend." (The complete story of Frick's Girlfriend is detailed here.)

Frick was an unusually vocal cat, largely due to the fact that he liked to advertise his curmudgeonly attitude. Frick was most fond is low, menacing growls and drawling moans of annoyance. Frick was not annoyed by: mousing, sleeping in the sun, and mounting his girlfriend. Just about everything else pissed him off, and caused him to scamper away to jump into (and gnaw on) his favourite cardboard box. Frick will attempt to insert himself into any box made of cardboard, no matter the size.

Frick had a soft spot in his heart for our toddling daughter Ingrid, who would hug Frick and - more amazing - Frick would allow it without complaint.

Frick was hit by a car on Gilford Road on Sunday 30 May 2004. He died instantly. He will be sorely missed. His burial in the yard is depicted here.
